Not sure I ever shared on here that Mallee Country was created first as two panels before it went to four. Focal point being the large waterhole where all living things gather and flock to for survival in the harsh desert terrain.

This drawing of Swainsona formosa (Sturt’s desert pea) is a detailed graphite study I created while developing my linocut print “Mallee Waters”. I focused on the plant’s form, texture, and tonal depth to better understand its structure and character.

This piece is still a work in progress, but I’m beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
It’s taken time not just in terms of the hours spent carving, which has been hours but in allowing the work itself to slowly emerge.

What began as one thing has evolved into something entirely different. Over time, the piece has gently revealed what it wanted to become. I haven’t forced or rushed it. Instead, I’ve allowed it to unfold at its own pace.

It feels less like I created it, and more like I’ve been a channel for it like the work itself has been the artist.
There’s been a quiet, steady rhythm to this process that feels deeply right.

Given enough time, the work found its way…

This two panel work is the start of a four panel large scale work, possible six of some time spent in the desert.

Banksia serrata, indigenous to the south coast ,distinctive with its gnarled, rough bark, serrated leaves, and large, pale yellow flower spikes….. a feast for our yellow tail black cockatoos.

It’s not every day that a collector shares an image of your work displayed in their home—especially when it’s in Fischer, Allgäu, Bavaria, Germany, some 16,000 km away. The piece, Heathland, inspired by the unique flora and fauna of the South Coast of NSW, creates a striking contrast against the winter landscape outside. The vast distance between Australia and Germany gives connection for the collectors between the local beauty of our environment and their home in this snowy setting. A little of Australia in Germany 🇩🇪!

“We are surrounded by water and the life it supports. A Kingfisher looks out of the
composition, guiding our eye across a scene of abundance. Water Lotuses, Kapok flowers in bloom and rambling Banksias. A flock of Black Cockatoos takes flight across towering rock faces into a vast sky. Halcyon Song (2024) captures West’s experience of the Nitmiluk National Park, and her 63 km trek across Jatbula Trail through Jawoyn Coutry. The work’s title ‘Halcyon’ has dual meanings. It is used to describe Kingfishers but also an idyllic time passed. This is an insightful entry into West’s work. Rather than being exact reproductions
of landscapes, West’s prints are assembled like collages. Layered upon one another, each visual motif is pieced together to create the overall composition. The resulting works are symbolic constellations and impressions that primarily seek to capture a feeling of belonging
to country. West leans into an idea of nature that feels magical and wrapped in nostalgia.
Life explodes before our eyes yet we are not voyeurs, our gaze is always met by another connecting us to the scene. In typical West fashion, our interconnectedness to the natural
world is emphasised. Perhaps then, these landscapes do not reside entirely in our
imaginations, we simply need to open our eyes to them.”

“We are surrounded by water and the life it supports. A Kingfisher looks out of the
composition, guiding our eye across a scene of abundance. Water Lotuses, Kapok flowers in bloom and rambling Banksias. A flock of Black Cockatoos takes flight across towering rock faces into a vast sky. Halcyon Song (2024) captures West’s experience of the Nitmiluk National Park, and her 63 km trek across Jatbula Trail through Jawoyn Coutry. The work’s title ‘Halcyon’ has dual meanings. It is used to describe Kingfishers but also an idyllic time passed. This is an insightful entry into West’s work. Rather than being exact reproductions
of landscapes, West’s prints are assembled like collages. Layered upon one another, each visual motif is pieced together to create the overall composition. The resulting works are symbolic constellations and impressions that primarily seek to capture a feeling of belonging
to country. West leans into an idea of nature that feels magical and wrapped in nostalgia.
Life explodes before our eyes yet we are not voyeurs, our gaze is always met by another connecting us to the scene. In typical West fashion, our interconnectedness to the natural
world is emphasised. Perhaps then, these landscapes do not reside entirely in our
imaginations, we simply need to open our eyes to them.”

This is an insightful entry into West’s work. Rather than being exact reproductions
of landscapes, West’s prints are assembled like collages. Layered upon one another, each visual motif is pieced together to create the overall composition. The resulting works are symbolic constellations and impressions that primarily seek to capture a feeling of belonging
to country. West leans into an idea of nature that feels magical and wrapped in nostalgia.
