This drawing of Swainsona formosa (Sturt’s desert pea) is a detailed graphite study I created while developing my linocut print “Mallee Waters”. I focused on the plant’s form, texture, and tonal depth to better understand its structure and character.

This piece is still a work in progress, but I’m beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
It’s taken time not just in terms of the hours spent carving, which has been hours but in allowing the work itself to slowly emerge.

What began as one thing has evolved into something entirely different. Over time, the piece has gently revealed what it wanted to become. I haven’t forced or rushed it. Instead, I’ve allowed it to unfold at its own pace.

It feels less like I created it, and more like I’ve been a channel for it like the work itself has been the artist.
There’s been a quiet, steady rhythm to this process that feels deeply right.

Given enough time, the work found its way…

This two panel work is the start of a four panel large scale work, possible six of some time spent in the desert.

Banksia serrata, indigenous to the south coast ,distinctive with its gnarled, rough bark, serrated leaves, and large, pale yellow flower spikes….. a feast for our yellow tail black cockatoos.

Last year @meagan.jacobs.art invited @skylla_design and I out to the artists to run a two week workshop/introductory into relief lino and fabric dying, this year we took it further with a 4week workshop taking them from carving to editioning.

Such a honour to watch them all embrace the medium in all their own unique style of carving. Thrilled to be part of the journey !

It’s not every day that a collector shares an image of your work displayed in their home—especially when it’s in Fischer, Allgäu, Bavaria, Germany, some 16,000 km away. The piece, Heathland, inspired by the unique flora and fauna of the South Coast of NSW, creates a striking contrast against the winter landscape outside. The vast distance between Australia and Germany gives connection for the collectors between the local beauty of our environment and their home in this snowy setting. A little of Australia in Germany 🇩🇪!

Flannel Flowers found along the road to Bundanon. These flannel flowers grow in the understory of the bush, protect from the hard elements of out coastal flannel flowers. They grew long and spindly, like they were dancing.

composition, guiding our eye across a scene of abundance. Water Lotuses, Kapok flowers in bloom and rambling Banksias. A flock of Black Cockatoos takes flight across towering rock faces into a vast sky. Halcyon Song (2024) captures West’s experience of the Nitmiluk National Park, and her 63 km trek across Jatbula Trail through Jawoyn Coutry. The work’s title ‘Halcyon’ has dual meanings. It is used to describe Kingfishers but also an idyllic time passed. This is an insightful entry into West’s work. Rather than being exact reproductions
of landscapes, West’s prints are assembled like collages. Layered upon one another, each visual motif is pieced together to create the overall composition. The resulting works are symbolic constellations and impressions that primarily seek to capture a feeling of belonging

I had just landed in Alice Springs when I heard that I had been awarded this for my work and was totally overwhelmed, so lovely to have my work recognised in this wonderful art prize.

“Sacred Shelter” plates I, II & III

The wild sacred lotus flowers, symbols of purity and enlightenment , cradle a refuge for tiny beings. Jacana’s balance on the lotus pads with their long toes and Rainbow Bee eaters vibrant plumage adorn this sanctuary, creating a harmonious life amongst the sea of lotus.

This work is hand painted lino cut limited edition original prints.

Can’t wait to see what unfolds and emerges ….

Reminiscing….. when we visited the lotus flowers in Darwin we found them at the end of the season very few flowers in bloom… but amongst some of decaying flower and leaves were burst of pink flowering up through the mud ….

Reflecting on the year that was 2023….. what a ride.

The year in a nutshell.

I exhibited in 1 solo exhibition & 4 group exhibitions. 🥳
My work was selected as a finalist in four Art prizes and I was awarded People’s Choice for the Waverly Art Prize 😝

I have pushed myself out of my comfort zone by hiking 62km through the Northern Territory, the best thing I’ve ever done and the most uncomfortable.😬🥰 I have seen parts of Australia that very few do! I have been humbled in awe of our great land.

I have created art that reflects my experiences and things that I love. All nature based. I have created the largest pieces of art (and smallest) to date and have seen my work go to places all over Australia and overseas 😝

It has been an amazing year of growth and development in my practice and I can’t wait to see what comes in 2024🥂

8 weeks of carving this 1mx1.2m lino and I’ve started proofing the first 4 plates for this piece…. Seeing it in ink changes everything…. Areas which I thought I’d leave for rest need small details so back carving into these spaces. Not too many major decisions until I proof the last two plates as they will be the lightest areas with less details which hopefully will balance the bottom four plates ….. back to carving until I proof this with all 6 plates …to be continued …… #halcyonsong
